Benefits of childcare outweigh costs say Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs

Families today are feeling the pinch of rising childcare costs as part of the cost of living crisis. Yet, while these expenses can be a significant burden, it’s crucial to understand the immense benefits that quality childcare provides. The good news is that financial support is available to help alleviate these costs.

Play is essential for children. It helps them socialise, manage their behaviours, explore physical abilities, and build resilience. Jane O’Toole, CEO of Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs, said “Balancing work and providing varied play opportunities for children is tough. Childcare settings provide structured, engaging play that helps children thrive and create lasting memories.”

Out of School Childcare Clubs offer immense benefits for children and families. Inspected by Care Inspectorate Wales, these clubs ensure high standards with well-trained staff and appropriate adult-to-child ratios. Jane O’Toole, added, “I think we need parents to recognise that childcare – and the benefits it brings to their children. Childcare costs can be a significant part of families’ outgoing but it’s part of children’s development”.

Notes:

[1] Since 2017, rising wages and inflation have increased childcare costs. The minimum wage for a person over 21 years old has risen from £7.50 per hour to £11.44 per hour, an increase of 52.53%. Over the same period, inflation (CPI) has increased by 24.8%, which has also pushed up other costs such as rent, electricity, heating, and food.

[2] CWLWM supports raising wages in the childcare sector to reflect the responsibilities and expertise required. Investing in well-compensated Playworkers is crucial for maintaining high-quality childcare.

[3] Balancing work and family life is challenging. The Welsh Government offers various programs to assist parents with childcare costs. Programs like Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit can cover a substantial portion of fees. Additionally, the Childcare Offer in Wales provides funded care for 3-4 year olds, helping manage expenses while ensuring quality care for your children.

[4] The Welsh Government has stated: “We want to ensure that the childcare and play workforces have the appropriate qualifications, skills and experience to provide high quality provision across the different types of settings.”
