Kids' clubs get numeracy help thanks to RBS

Date: 05/10/2016

A charity which supports more than 1,500 childcare clubs across Wales is offering events to help with financial and numeracy skills thanks to a grant from RBS.

Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs is an umbrella organisation supporting independent clubs which offer childcare before and after school and during school holidays. Between them the clubs cater for more than 40,000 children aged three to 14.

Now the charity has been awarded an RBS Community Grant of £13,715 which it will use to fund ten events around Wales to help playworkers, managers and committee members to develop financial and numeracy skills.

The events will be designed to help playworkers with ideas for number and literacy games which will help children learn skills through play, and to help those who run the clubs learn about financial procedures and reports as well as accurate record-keeping skills.

The charity’s South East Wales team leader Alex Fudge said: “This sort of training is very much needed. We have been consulting with clubs and this is one of the areas they have identified”.

In a survey carried out by the charity of 753 playworkers and managers across Wales, 38% of respondents said they needed support with financial sustainability and with cashflow forecasts and 70% said they would like help with developing play activities.

The All Wales charity, based in Llanishen, Cardiff, and with regional offices in Cross Hands and Colwyn Bay, was alerted to the grant opportunity by Neil Williams, their relationship manager at NatWest, which is part of RBS.

Neil said: “RBS Community Grants are designed to support charities and organisations which mirror our aims in the communities we work in. When Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs told me there was a clear need for support and training in financial management and numeracy skills I suggested they apply for a grant. I’m delighted that they have been successful and that staff, volunteers and children across Wales will benefit.”

Clubs interested in finding out more about the events, due to kick off in the autumn term, can contact  Alex Fudge on 029 20741000
