Connecting and Supporting Out of School Childcare Clubs and Communities

Date: 30/04/2020

As we navigate our way through the unknown waters of 2020, many of you we have spoken to have talked about protecting your childcare settings as far as possible against future business interruption and uncertainty.  A number of you have reluctantly closed during the Covid -19 crisis or may be caring for far fewer children than normal and may have a breathing space to consider how best to prepare yourselves for when you are able to open once again and support children and families across Wales.  And Wales is going to need you to enable us to go back into our work places, safe in the knowledge that our children are being well cared for.

Through our National Community Fund Project ‘Connecting and Supporting Out of School Childcare Clubs and Communities’, we have Regional Childcare Business Development Officers, who have been able to support you and provide guidance through recent weeks.  They have also been discussing the following that will help support your sustainability when you are able to open once again.

  1. The Out of School Childcare Assessment (affectionately known as the OSCA) https://forms.gle/AYYo6yNX6h8PXRZh7can be completed online.  It will enable you to reflect on all aspects of your setting (and could also form part of your Quality of Care Review)and help inform an action plan that can be completed with your Childcare Business Development Officer to enhance the quality, sustainability and robustness of your childcare business.  The information can also help us as an organisation develop relevant guidance and resources to support the sector.
  2. Becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) to limit the personal liability of voluntary management committee members.  You can read about the benefits of becoming a CIO here and our team are on hand to support you through the process.
  3. Becoming Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) registered, which, amongst many benefits., helps improve sustainability and can reduce fees for eligible parents (by then registering for tax-free childcare).

If there is any information, guidance or resources you feel would be useful for your sector at this time, we would find it really useful if you got in touch!
