Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs was recently awarded funding from the Welsh Government Sustainable Development Fund, Hanfod Cymru and City & County of Swansea to develop a new project – Gower Play Our Way.
Gower Play our Way follows on from the success of three previous projects, Brecon Beacons Park Play, Pembrokeshire Park Play Our Way and Snowdonia Park Play Our Way and each project has enabled us to expand our free resource pack Nature Zone to include even more activities.
Through the Gower Play Our Way Project, we developed 8 new fun activities, suitable for Out of School Childcare Clubs to enjoy indoors or outdoors, and to encourage children to learn about nature, conservation and the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (Gower AONB). To help us with the project, we invited two Out of School Childcare Clubs, Crwys After School Club and Penclawdd Wraparound and After School Club to help us pilot the activities and tell us what they thought. The children attending had a go at each of the activities such as building a lighthouse out of plant pots, making moths out of magazine pages, wearing crowns made of leaves and getting messy with soapy sea foam made out of cornflour and fairy liquid!
The children and Playworkers will continue to use the activity ideas over the Summer months. One of the clubs enjoyed the plant pot lighthouse idea so much that they have decided to make lots more over the Summer to create a feature in their outdoor space. The children enjoyed getting messy whilst making the soapy sea foam and experimented with different colour food colouring to see how many colours they could make.
The children and Playworkers feedback on each of the activities has now helped us to develop and finalise the activities ready to be included in the Nature Zone pack, which will be updated soon. The Nature Zone pack is free for all member Out of School Childcare Clubs to download from our website and use.
A big thank you to the children and Playworkers of Crwys After School Club and Penclawdd Wraparound and After School Club for helping us with the Gower Play Our Way project!
Sion Brynach, Chief Executive of Hanfod Cymru, visited the pilot workshop at Penclawdd Wraparound and After School Club and was very impressed with the activities and had lots of fun meeting the children.
