Sunday 18th December 2022 Hanukkah Begins
Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah (or Chanukah in Hebrew) is a traditional eight day Jewish holiday, that falls in November or December each year. Each night of Hanukkah, the Hanukkiah (a nine-branched candelabra) is lit in a particular order and can often be seen in house windows. Hanukkah as a tradition is over 2,000 years old and celebrates the miracle of the oil. This was when the Holy Temple in Jerusalem was damaged and there was only enough oil to light the menorah for one night, but miraculously the candles burnt for eight days. BBC Bitesize has easy to read information about Hanukkah and its traditions.
